When I have a link that is wired-up with a jQuery or JavaScript event such as:
How do I prevent the page from scrolling to the top? When I remove the href attribute from the anchor the page doesn't scroll to the top but the link doesn't appear to be click-able.

You need to prevent the default action for the click event (i.e. navigating to the link target) from occurring.
There are two ways to do this.
Option 1: event.preventDefault()
Call the
.preventDefault()
method of the event object passed to your handler. If you're using jQuery to bind your handlers, that event will be an instance of jQuery.Event
and it will be the jQuery version of .preventDefault()
. If you're using addEventListener
to bind your handlers, it will be an Event
and the raw DOM version of .preventDefault()
. Either way will do what you need.Examples:
Option 2: return false;
In jQuery:
Returning false from an event handler will automatically call event.stopPropagation() and event.preventDefault()
So, with jQuery, you can alternatively use this approach to prevent the default link behaviour:
If you're using raw DOM events, this will also work on modern browsers, since the HTML 5 spec dictates this behaviour. However, older versions of the spec did not, so if you need maximum compatibility with older browsers, you should call
.preventDefault()
explicitly. See event.preventDefault() vs. return false (no jQuery) for the spec detail.Community♦

You can set your href to
#!
instead of #
For example, Star wars company of heroes.
will not do any scrolling when clicked.
Beware! This will still add an entry to the browser's history when clicked, meaning that after clicking your link, the user's back button will not take them to the page they were previously on. For this reason, it's probably better to use the
.preventDefault()
approach, or to use both in combination.Here is a Fiddle illustrating this (just scrunch your browser down until your get a scrollbar):
http://jsfiddle.net/9dEG7/
http://jsfiddle.net/9dEG7/
For the spec nerds - why this works:
This behaviour is specified in the HTML5 spec under the Navigating to a fragment identifier section. The reason that a link with a href of
'#'
causes the document to scroll to the top is that this behaviour is explicitly specified as the way to handle an empty fragment identifier:2. If
fragid
is the empty string, then the indicated part of the document is the top of the documentUsing a href of
'#!'
instead works simply because it avoids this rule. There's nothing magic about the exclamation mark - it just makes a convenient fragment identifier because it's noticeably different to a typical fragid and unlikely to ever match the id
or name
of an element on your page. Indeed, we could put almost anything after the hash; the only fragids that won't suffice are the empty string, the word 'top', or strings that match name
or id
attributes of elements on the page.More exactly, we just need a fragment identifier that will cause us to fall through to step 8 in the following algorithm for determining the indicated part of the document from the fragid:
- Apply the URL parser algorithm to the URL, and let fragid be the fragment component of the resulting parsed URL.
- If
fragid
is the empty string, then the indicated part of the document is the top of the document; stop the algorithm here. - Let
fragid bytes
be the result of percent-decodingfragid
. - Let
decoded fragid
be the result of applying the UTF-8 decoder algorithm tofragid bytes
. If the UTF-8 decoder emits a decoder error, abort the decoder and instead jump to the step labeledno decoded fragid
. - If there is an element in the DOM that has an ID exactly equal to
decoded fragid
, then the first such element in tree order is the indicated part of the document; stop the algorithm here. - No decoded fragid: If there is an a element in the DOM that has a name attribute whose value is exactly equal to
fragid
(notdecoded fragid
), then the first such element in tree order is the indicated part of the document; stop the algorithm here. - If fragid is an ASCII case-insensitive match for the string
top
, then the indicated part of the document is the top of the document; stop the algorithm here. - Otherwise, there is no indicated part of the document.
As long as we hit step 8 and there is no indicated part of the document, the following rule comes into play:
If there is no indicated part .. then the user agent must do nothing.
which is why the browser doesn't scroll.

An easy approach is to leverage this code:
This approach doesn't force a page refresh, so the scrollbar stays in place. Also, it allows you to programmatically change the onclick event and handle client side event binding using jQuery.
For these reasons, the above solution is better than:
where the last solution will avoid the scroll-jump issue if and only if the myClickHandler method doesn't fail.

Returning false from the code you're calling will work and in a number of circumstances is the preferred method but you can also so this
When it comes to SEO it really depends on what your link is going to be used for. If you are going to actually use it to link to some other content then I would agree ideally you would want something meaningful here but if you are using the link for functionality purposes maybe like Stack Overflow does for the post toolbar (bold, italic, hyperlink, etc) then it probably doesn't matter.

You should change the
to
This way when the link is clicked the page won't scroll to top. This is cleaner than using href='#' and then preventing the default event from running.
I have good reasons for this on the first answer to this question, like the
return false;
will not execute if the called function throws an error, or you may add the return false;
to a doSomething()
function and then forget to use return doSomething();

If you can simply change the
href
value, you should use: Another neat solution I just came up with is to use jQuery to stop the click action from occurring and causing the page to scroll, but only for
dazbradburydazbradburyhref='#'

Link to something more sensible than the top of the page in the first place. Then cancel the default event.

Also, you can use event.preventDefault inside onclick attribute.
No need to write exstra click event.

You might want to check your CSS. In the example here: https://css-tricks.com/the-checkbox-hack/ there's
position: absolute; top: -9999px;
. This is particularly goofy on Chrome, as onclick='whatever'
still jumps to the absolute position of the clicked element.Removing
position: absolute; top: -9999px;
, for display: none;

This is an old problem and I haven't seen any recent posts about it.
I get scrolling problems randomly in some sites. I suspect compatibility problems between Edge and the sites but I don't see any 'compatibility' options like there are in Internet Explorer. The problem, when scrolling through pages on a site, such as Musician's Friend: Musical Instruments Store I will be looking at items and scrolling will slow down and then get to a point it will no longer scroll through the page(s). Reloading the site and starting over will sometimes fix it and sometimes it will go back to the no scroll. I've also noticed this in the Cakewalk Sonar forum, http://forum.cakewalk.com/default.aspx There are also others. If I switch over to Internet Explorer (or Firefox) I don't have the problem.
I'm on the latest version of Win 10.

Scrolling One Page At A Time?
Oct 10, 2015I am wondering about performance. All seems to be working. Last December I built a new i7-4790k with 512GB SSD and 16 GB memory. I am using Windows 10 Pro..64 bit and all seems fast. My video card is an EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti FTW. This should be overkill as I do not play games.
So my problem is that on the web, I seem to get a page at a time, instead of a smooth scroll. I use Firefox, but now I see it is NOT a web issue. I see this in multi page Office 2013 documents and even Quicken. Is there some setting that I am missing that will load all it can and provide smooth scrolling instead of a page at a time brief delay?
Win 10 and my drivers are up to date.

Touch Screen Scrolling
Aug 6, 2015I upgraded to Win. 10 8/3. Everything seemed to work fine for 2 days. Then yesterday, the 5th, I could no longer scroll sites up or down by touching and moving my fingers up or down. The other touch functions still work, like going to links or sites, the 'click here' (touch here) options, close,etc. I can even scroll by touching the scroll bar and moving it up or down or right or left. My fingers don't scroll anymore unless they move the bar. And I just noticed areas on the sites don't get bigger or smaller with just fingers touching them and moving them farther apart either. But I don't know if that's supposed to happen. It did with Win 8.
Screen Falls Off Page - Resolution Doesn't Match Screen Width
Nov 5, 2015Since upgrading to Windows 10 from 7, I ran into the same issue as [URL] ..
So I tried the catalyst scaling option for my desktop and this seemed to fix the issue for mostly everything, desktop and most games, However, the problem still seems to arise with some games I try to play, such as Xcom Enemy Within or Dawn of War 2. Changing resolution in these games doesn't appear to have any effect, the image is still falling off the screen, I use my desktop on a 32 inch TV as opposed to a monitor via HDMI, and keep it set to 1600x900 as opposed to its native 1920x10180, but even leaving it at 1920 has the same effect.
I have my specs on a dxdiag file, dunno where to upload it here, but I'm using a AMD Radeon R9 200 Series on an Asus I built.

Drivers/Hardware :: How To Change From Two-finger Scrolling Back To One-finger Scrolling
Aug 25, 2015I decided to make the jump to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1, and I have to say, the design looks simpler to use, but this new OS software has done something with my touchpad. Originally, on my Windows 8.1, I was able to scroll through whatever web pages or folders in my computer with one finger using my touchpad. With this new update, initially, I thought it broke my touchpad completely, but the problem has been narrowed down to having to now use two fingers to scroll in the most awkward way as this touchpad doesn't seemed to be designed for two finger scrolling. Is there a way for me to change this back? Would I have to revert back to Windows 8.1 to get my one finger scrolling back?
The laptop I am using is a Gateway NE56R34u, and the touchpad is an ELAN.

Page Fault Found In Non Page Area Error Shows When Using Computer
Oct 30, 2015I have a desktop computer, it was working fine almost a year and now from a few days I am having a serious issue and that is when using my computer (generally or during gaming) it displays an error i.e PAGE_FAULT_FOUND_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA. The screen turns pink and the edges are green (that's probably because of the resolution as I use 3840x2160 so the error kinds of destorts) but that's not the real issue, the main problem is the error itself.

BSOD :: Black Screen With Blinking Cursor Bar Before Booting Into Window Just After BIOS Page
Nov 8, 2015I recently upgraded to window 10 from window 7 with iso file. I didn't had internet access then, but my window run successfully. Later, when i tried to attach another display with Laptop it did not detect it. So, i installed the windows updates. But after installing i was unable to boot into windows. A black screen with blinking cursor appears right after the Dell Logo. I am only able to go into bios setup by pressing F2, no safe mode option. I tried making a bootable Pen drive for repair but even it wasn't detected. I already change the boot priority in bios menu. Therefore i am unable to fresh install the window as laptop cd drive is not functioning from quite some time.

Touchpad Two Finger Scrolling Not Working
Mar 19, 2016Ever since I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 15-3521 laptop to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 last year I've had intermittent issues with the touchpad. Specifically, about 25% of the times that I turn on the computer I'm completely unable to scroll up or down using two finger multi-touch gestures (putting two fingers on the touchpad and moving them up or down to make a webpage scroll up or down, for example). The mouse cursor will also randomly stop responding for a few seconds at a time when the scrolling issue is occuring. Usually I just restart the computer to get around it but I'd like to fix the problem once and for all.
I've tried fixing the issue a number of times over the past few months by upgrading the drivers from Dell's website as well as attempting other fixes suggested on other forum posts describing the same issues but haven't had any luck. I'm ready to try anything you suggest, including things I may have done already (ex: downloading the latest drivers), preferably saving more drastic measures for last. In addition, I should mention that after upgrading to Windows 10 I also began having intermittent issues with sound quality (bass is very low) when using headphones.

Installation :: Scrolling Inactive Windows Doesn't Work
Oct 22, 2015I have installed the Win 10 enterprise LTSB the trial version. So far, so good, with the exception of two details:
- The scrolling of inactive windows isn't working properly. I mean, it works only when the 'Settings' window is the active, then I can scroll the inactive windows underneath it, but nothing else.
- I tried to update the system, hoping that it would fix the issue, but it doesn't download anything.
Maybe the update function is disabled in the trial version?

Customization :: Cursor Reset To Default And Scrolling Goes Away On Restart
Sep 18, 2015So two things; when I restart my computer my saved and in-use cursor always resets back to the default cursor pack that comes with the system. I had this issue in Windows 8.1 too, but now it's getting on my nerves because I've got to go to the cursor customization panel every time I turn my computer back on for 2 reasons.
The second reason is not one I had in any previous versions. On my laptop touch pad, I always use the invisible scroll bar option on the edge, which you can turn on through the Synaptics settings, which is now found in the same panel I use to change my cursor back.
Is there any way to make these two settings default so I don't have to redo them every single time I turn my computer on?
For the cursors, I download/make individual cursors and customized them, saving the general group in a file I call 'custom cursors', I don't download entire packs. I never have to reload the cursor set I'm trying to use, I just have to pull up the panel and click 'ok' to get back out of it, and this updates me to the custom cursors that were already on there, like the system knew I wanted them, but I just sort of had to remind it to activate them. For the Synaptics issue, I never had the problem before the Windows 10 update and I use the scrolling function a LOT.

Touchpad Scrolling Function Turns Off Automatically After Every Reboot
Jul 29, 2015I've installed Windows 10 on two different HP Pavilion laptops (dv5, g6), and the problem is that the scrolling function turns off automatically (will be unchecked) after every reboot. Tried with different versions of Synaptic driver, the newest and an older one, it's all the same.
Hello everyone,
Please I am in desperate need of help. A month or so ago my computer started auto-scrolling. I notice it the most when I use Adobe Lightroom, when I hover the curser over any of the sliders they automatically scroll to the left (down). I get the same auto scroll down in any windows boxes (specifically control panel stuff) and any dropdown menus in chrome or IE disappear almost instantly when I click on them.
I have tried everything. I've tried the auto detect colour solution, I've tried a new mouse, a new keyboard, a new mouse and keyboard. I've tried removing the mouse, restarting the mouse, restarting the software, restarting the computer, full shutdowns of the computer while removing the mouse. I've checked that the mouse drivers are up to date. I've tried keytweak but nothing, not a single thing works.
I read somewhere that the issue is potentially my Nvidia drivers and I should install an older version of the drivers but I have no idea how to.
PLEASE if anyone knows how to do the above process or another solution please, please, please let me know, it's making my computer almost unusable with certain software.

Do you want to enable or disable the built-in inactive window scrolling feature in Windows 10? Not sure how to use inactive window scrolling feature? In this guide, we will explain how to use inactive window scrolling feature, and how to enable or disable it in Windows 10.
What is inactive window scrolling feature?
Inactive window scrolling feature was not natively available in previous Windows versions and users had to use third-party tools to enable inactive window scrolling feature in Windows 7/8.
The inactive window scrolling feature in Windows 10 allows you a scroll an inactive window without clicking on it. That is, the feature enables you scroll a non-focused window without clicking on it.
For instance, if you open Firefox browser first and then open Notepad program, the previously opened Firefox browser automatically becomes inactive. In previous Windows versions, you would need to click on the inactive window (Firefox in this example) to be able to scroll it.
But in Windows 10, you can scroll the inactive window (Firefox here) by just hovering the mouse cursor over it and moving mouse wheel or clicking arrow keys on keyboard. The advantage of this feature is that you can scroll inactive window without clicking on it or making it active.
As said before, inactive window scrolling feature is built in to Windows 10 and enabled by default. However, Microsoft has provided an option to turn off the feature to help those users who might find it annoying.
Follow the given below directions to enable or disable inactive window scrolling feature in Windows 10.
Method 1
To enable or disable inactive window scrolling in Windows 10
Step 1: Open Settings app. There are a couple of ways to open Settings in Windows 10, but you can either click Settings icon on the left-side of the Start menu or use Windows + I hotkey.
Step 2: Click Devices (Bluetooth, printers, mouse).
Step 3: Click Mouse and touchpad to see settings related to them.
Step 4: Finally, turn off the option titled Scroll inactive windows when I hover over them. And if it’s turned off, you can enable the same here.
That’s it!
Method 2
Enable or disable inactive window scrolling via Registry
And if you are unable to find the option, you can use the Registry Editor to enable or disable inactive window scrolling in Windows 10.
Step 1: Open Registry Editor. Type Regedit in Start menu search box and press Enter key. Click Yes button when you see the User Account Control dialog to open Registry Editor.
Step 2: Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop
Step 3: On the right-side, look for MouseWheelRouting, and create one (DWORD (32-bit) Value) if it doesn’t exist.
Step 4: Lastly, double-click on MouseWheelRouting entry, change its default value to 2 (one) to turn on inactive window scroll, and set the value to 0 (zero) to turn off the feature.
Do you find the inactive window scroll feature useful?
